Joshua Magee and Marcus Mullins from LunarNorth in Detroit Michigan discuss their work for The Verge on First Lady Michelle Obama’s revolutionary 360 interview at The White House. It was their first time working with 360 graphics, and their 2.5 week deadline loomed large. Their story-focused approach also needed to teach the viewer how to watch a 360 video, while keeping the experience dynamic and engaging.

Skybox Studio was essential in helping these traditional graphic designers work in the 360 environment. “It was really good that we could just sort of work the way… you’re doing your job and the software is out of your way”, explains Marcus Mullins.

Part of a series of presentations by leading 360/VR filmmakers, hosted by Mettle at Adobe Max, 2016.

Designing in 360 – Since this technology is still so new, the team needed to build a tutorial for the viewer, as they began the project.

Storyboarding – prep work for the project

The Verge had already shot the footage and had started building assets for the project.

Learning 360 graphic design from the user side, the team posted and reviewed their development often, finding that solid colors can be extremely overwhelming and that adjusting the scale of their graphics would produce a better user experience.

Merging the 360 footage with the 360 graphics made the interview into a dynamic experience, and helped to tell a more complete story.

Lunar North is a design, animation, and post production studio proudly based in Detroit, MI. They are well-known for their collaboration with The Verge on the Michelle Obama 360, creating the animated 360/VR motion graphics.
