How to Remove a Camera Rig from 360 Footage | SkyBox Studio

You’ve shot your awesome 360 footage. How do you get rid of the camera rig from your footage? Chris Bobotis, (Developer/Partner at Mettle) leads us through an easy process using SkyBox Studio 360 plugin for After Effects. He imports his footage into Ae and applies SkyBox Convertor to convert the 360 footage into Cubic Cross format, which is an undistorted view.

Since the rig is fixed in one position, on the hood of the car, he exports only a single frame. He retouches out the rig in PhotoShop, using Content Aware Fill to do most of the work. The re-touched image is imported back into Ae, exactly over the original footage, and masked as a patch. He then uses SkyBox Convertor to switch the footage format back to Equirectangular, 360/VR format. You can create an Equirectangular reflection map from your comp to reflect back onto your patch, to help blend it with the rest of the car. All you have left to do is render the comp and you’re gold.

SkyBox Convertor changes the format of the stitched footage from 360 format to Cubic Cross. We have an undistorted view to export as a single frame to PhotoShop.

The retouched PSD file is imported back into After Effects, and masked to fit as a patch over the rig.
